REVIEW: "Newsies Jr." — Young Talent Takes Center Stage

MY RECOMMENDATION: Don't miss this one. "Newsies Jr." is an energetic, uplifting musical filled with memorable songs, exciting choreography, and a heartfelt story about courage, friendship, and standing up for justice. What makes this musical especially remarkable is that every performer is between the ages of 7 and 19. With no adults in the cast, these talented young actors deliver a polished, high-energy performance that would be impressive for performers of any age.

I attended a dress rehearsal performance.

Based on the true story of the 1899 New York newsboys' strike, "Newsies Jr." follows Jack Kelly and his fellow newsies as they unite to challenge newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer after he raises the price they must pay for the papers they sell. Along the way, they discover that when ordinary people stand together, they can accomplish extraordinary things.

With a cast of 39, there is hardly a dull moment as enthusiastic young performers fill the stage with energy, enthusiasm, and commitment.

Leading the way is Tristan Bakanosky as Jack Kelly, who is on stage for much of the show. He combines confidence, charisma, and an excellent singing voice to create a believable leader whom the audience quickly embraces. His heartfelt rendition of "Santa Fe" is one of the musical's highlights, beautifully capturing Jack's longing for a better life.

Ella Tokar is excellent as the determined young reporter Katherine Plumber, bringing intelligence, warmth, and plenty of spirit to the role. She also delivers an outstanding performance of "Watch What Happens," one of the musical's standout songs.

Roman Darity makes an especially appealing Crutchie, giving the character humor, heart, and genuine vulnerability.

Sam Wilson shines as Davey, delivering a standout performance highlighted by spectacular dancing that is one of the evening's most exciting moments.

Asher Needles handles the challenge of portraying both the stern Joseph Pulitzer and the dignified Governor Theodore Roosevelt with ease, making each portrayal distinct and believable.

Badge Burrell is delightful as the energetic Les, while Grace Baglia provides warmth and strong vocals as Medda Larkin.

Every member of this talented 39-person cast contributes to the show's success. Together, they create an ensemble filled with enthusiasm, strong vocals, and wonderful teamwork that keeps the show moving briskly from beginning to end.

Director Donna Everett deserves tremendous credit for bringing this impressive production together in just ten weeks. The confidence, teamwork, and professionalism displayed by this cast are a testament to her leadership, vision, and dedication.

Stage Manager Anne Day keeps the many moving pieces of this large undertaking running smoothly behind the scenes.

Ashley Thompson's choreography is one of the show's greatest strengths. The production numbers are exciting, creative, and beautifully executed, with performers dancing through the aisles and onto the stage, making the audience feel like part of the action. The ensemble numbers "Carrying the Banner," "The World Will Know," and "King of New York" are among the evening's highlights.

Music Director Pam McNeill leads a six-piece live orchestra, with keyboardist Alex Tapp among the talented musicians who provide a rich musical foundation throughout the performance. Live orchestras are becoming increasingly rare in community theater and are almost unheard of in youth productions, making their inclusion especially noteworthy.

ONE FINAL NOTE: "Newsies Jr." is more than an entertaining musical—it's a wonderful showcase for the next generation of theatrical talent. Tryon Little Theater has also made this event especially family-friendly by pricing tickets at just $5 for anyone under 18 and $10 for adults, making it easy for families to experience live theater together. It's difficult to imagine a better family entertainment bargain anywhere in our area.
