Advanced Theater Techniques for Actors

Levels: Middle - High School, Adults

Dates:  Sept 17, 24, 29, Oct 1, 14, 29, Nov 3, 5, 12, 19

Time:  5 pm - 6: 30pm

Cost: Students (through 18): $90 for first student, $75 per additional student

         Adults: $125

Overview:  This class will enhance acting skills for the basic theater student.  This is NOT a beginners’ class.

Classes 1-2: Trust-building games, pantomime, and spatial awareness exercises; projection, enunciation, and physical movement; breathing exercises, non-verbal storytelling, tableaux

Class 3: Spontaneity, listening on stage, and basic character objectives; Uta Hagen exercises and the nine questions for character development

Class 4: Objective/goal, obstacle, stakes, and action/tactic as a powerful building block for actors; working with verbs as tactics 

Class 5: How to read, select, and analyze a short monologue; monologue introduction, script scoring using monologues; in-class rehearsal time

Class 6: Monologue presentations; Shakespearean monologue introduction; in-class rehearsal time

Class 7: Shakespeare monologue performance; 2-person scene work introduction

Class 8: Michael Shurtleff’s 12 guideposts to characterization; scene scoring - finding beats, subtext, and director’s staging; in-class rehearsal time

Class 9: Partner collaboration, character relationships, and sustaining a scene; determine how status influences characterization and character actions; in-class rehearsal for 2-person scene

Class 10: Presentation of 2-person scenes

Basic Musical Theater Choreography (Technique and Concepts) 

Levels: Middle - High School, Adults

Dates:  Sept 15, 22, 29, Oct 6, 13, 20, 27, 28, Nov. 10, 17

Time: 4:45 - 6:15 (for 9/15 & 9/22), then 5 pm - 6:30 pm for the rest of the classes

Cost: Students (through 18): $90 for first student, $75 per additional student

            Adults: $125

Overview: This class provides instruction in basic musical theater choreography.

Each concept is a different week:

Weeks 1- 4: Basic movement/ most common dance steps and transitions

Week 5: Leg technique

Week 6: Time for turns

Week 7: All about arms

Week 8: Stance/ positioning/ turnout

Week 9: Differentiation of low core vs high (think hip hop style center of gravity vs Rockettes style posturing)

Week 10: Synchronization vs freestyle movement

Special Effects Makeup*

Level:  Middle - High School, Adults

Date: Saturday, Oct. 24 

Time: 2 - 5 pm

Cost: $30

Overview: Learn make-up techniques for aging, wounds, and prosthetics in this 3-hour workshop. Attendees should bring a towel or apron to protect clothing from makeup, latex, and stage blood.

*Liquid latex will be used during this class.  Please notify instructor in advance of latex or makeup allergies
